What is Poetry?
Poetry defined in Dictioanry.com is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. I kind of agree with this definition. What I would define poetry is some form of writing that expresses your thoughts.
Poetry I believe can be so many different things. It is a form of writing without restrictions. You can write about anything in any kind of way you want. It can be very direct or you can write what you want to say in an indirect way. A poem can be full of mysteries for readers to figure out the real meaning. It can be full of metaphors representing a true meaning behind its words.
Not only that poetry is very effective to send messages to the readers. Through repetition for example, the poem emphasizes and keeps on repeating on an idea or word that can get through from the poet to the reader. This also can be used in music like effects. Poets use imagery, word association, and the music like effects to decorate their poems. Using all of these poetic elements makes “layers” inside the poem for the reader to figure out.
As I said above, poetry can be anything. There are so many different formats such as ballads, sonnets, and etc. The poetic elements allow you to be specific sometimes or broad sometimes. It creates mysteries and can be interpreted in different ways just the way you think. Through ought this unit, I’ve learned so much and I think poetry is just like a tree. It adds on more and more as it grows just like my poems as I write more and get to learn more.
